"Maybe it's time to stop running and start staying."
I wasn't sure what to expect from this second installment of The One series. I was left hanging, worrying, and hoping at the end of book one. I started this book without having seen the synopsis, so I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it focused mainly on Johnny & Delta. I had met these two previously, and I knew just enough to be very intrigued, wanting more.
Book one is about Ava & Christian. Ava's sister is Delta, and Christian's best friend is Johnny. They are brought together by those relationships, but once they meet, there's no turning back. They are drawn to each other. But they are both aware that their past and their lifestyles prove that they aren't meant to stay together. He's married to the sea, and she's got a son to care for. So, they settle for 'just for now' and it's the best either has ever experienced.
When Johnny walks away from her, after their very brief but intense time together, Delta finally understands what all those country music lyrics mean. She's been writing songs most of her life, but they were usually about drinking and sexy cowboys and one-night-stands. She's never actually had a relationship, so she's never written about love before. It doesn't seem possible that her feelings for Jonny could be that strong, but tell that to her broken heart.
Jonny left Delta to return to the sea, his first love. However; the comfort she usually brings him is missing. He can't stop thinking about Delta and their time together. And then he hears her voice singing on the radio, her soulful voice sharing their secrets, and her words telling him she hasn't forgotten either. He knows she's singing to him. He knows he has to find her.
I can't tell you how thrilled I was to find out that this story has a music theme. That's one of my weaknesses. I just can't resist stories that include beautiful song lyrics and music industry details. I devoured every single word with my heart in my hands, turning each page with bated breath, hoping for the ending I was savoring in my imagination. Hoping that the author that created the story felt the same and would give me my heart's desire.
While Chris & Ava are part of this book, they are in a supporting role. Their love story is not finished. The mind-bending events that exploded just as they were on the verge of confronting each other prevented them from doing so. How am I expect to survive the wait to find out the outcome? I'm even more attached to these amazing characters and totally invested in their future, which I hope is as beautiful as they deserve. I can't wait. The line forms here...
I'll leave you with a few words from this beautiful letter written by Christian to his Ava.
I loathe each of the thousands of miles between us, but I cannot wish them away, for I hope at the end of my journey I shall find you. Or rather, find myself, and thus...you. Myself and us. I am taking the long way home, Ava.
